Disney has gone back and forth when it comes to its position on actor Johnny Depp, the future of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, and the pirate movie that will star Margot Robbie. Disney alienated Johnny Depp and his fans before, during, and after the Depp vs Heard trial, but now rumors have been spreading that suggest that Disney does indeed want Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow — and now a high-profile member of the franchise’s team has spoken up!

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer defended Johnny Depp and said that he “would love to have him” in the next movie. “You’d have to ask them. I can’t answer that question,” Bruckheimer said when asked if Disney was trying to bring Depp back after the defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

“He’s a friend, a terrific actor and it’s unfortunate that personal lives creep into everything we do,” Bruckheimer added after his vague response about Disney’s intentions. Bruckheimer then went on to say in a different interview with AP Entertainment, however, that they were “working on it.”

“Nothing’s definitive yet, but we continue to take little baby steps getting towards a screenplay,” the producer said when asked about Johnny Depp and another Captain Jack Sparrow movie. Take a look at the footage from the interview in the Tweet shown below!

There have been some rumors that Johnny Depp has already started working on the next Pirates movie, but this seems unlikely since Bruckheimer has implied that progress on the next Captain Jack Sparrow project (if it is indeed happening) is slow.

We had also heard a rumor that Disney was abandoning the entire franchise and cutting its losses, but fortunately, that rumor has been dispelled!
