Some are questioning whether Disney will have an equally tough time in 2024 as it did in 2023 for a whole host of new reasons.

The Walt Disney Company is coming off a difficult 2023. The company saw massive restructuring in the first half of the year, with Disney CEO Bob Iger back at the helm, which meant layoffs to the tune of 4000 employees getting fired and 3000 jobs being canceled. At the same time, Disney had a tough time at the box office, with Universal dethroning Disney.

New Article Questions Disney’s Fortunes in 2024

A few days into 2024, Blog Jaun observed, “Disney may not be out of the woods of their rocky few years of box office failure, political turmoil, and more recently, their iconic character becoming public domain.”

Calling out the three main issues Disney will have to deal with in 2024, namely, filling the theme parks, superhero fatigue, political issues, and Mickey Mouse going into the public domain.

Disney Parks

On the subject of theme parks, the article argued that while the theme parks have been unbelievably crowded even during off seasons, it was entirely possible between the increase in bad guest behavior, price rises at the parks, and increased crowds that some families might choose to opt out of the Disney Park experience.

As the article phrased it, “It’s going to be interesting to see what happens when the crowds shift a bit and families decide to sit out a trip down to Orlando and do something else.”

Super Hero Fatigue

This is a subject that’s been debated by many. The crux of the argument is that superhero movies have been done too many times, and because of this, Disney will likely cut back on the Marvel releases while they rework the format of superhero movies.

Note that the only Marvel film hitting screens this year is the debut of Deadpool in the MCU with Deadpool 3.

Political Fights

Everything has been political with Disney recently. It’s a reality that isn’t great for a company that prides itself on creating magic and living out fantasies. With the battle with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis taking center stage, it’s meant that Disney’s brand image has shifted from its previously pristine condition.

People’s memories are fickle, and this might fade, but the aftermath of the political history Disney now has might hurt it before disappearing.

Steamboat Willie’s Mickey Mouse Enters the Public Domain

Finally, the article concludes with Steamboat Willie’s Mickey Mouse entering the public domain. We already know of two horror films that will be made featuring the iconic mouse. The child-friendly mouse will soon become a thing of the past.

“But the overall positive message Mickey carried is going to now be tarnished a bit with things like horror films, internet memes, independent animation, and who knows what the adult film industry is working on right now,” the article explains.

Of course, despite this, Bob Iger is optimistic about the future and believes Disney is in a period of building. However, only time will tell what will really become of the Mouse House.
