Which Taylor Swift Love Song is Perfect for Your Favorite Disney Couple?

Walt Disney Studios has been telling some of our favorite fairy tale love stories since they first began their venture into full-length films in 1937. We have all grown up watching many once upon a times, true love’s kisses, and happily ever afters presented with Walt Disney’s gorgeous animation and trademark storytelling. Meanwhile singer/songwriter Taylor Swift has been writing some of the greatest songs of love and heartbreak since she first entered the business with her debut album at the age of 17.

She has since released 9 studio albums Taylor Swift (2006), Fearless (2008), Speak Now (2010), Red (2012), 1989 (2014), Reputation (2017), Lover (2019), Folklore & Evermore (2020). She also recorded additional “Taylor’s Version” re-releases of Fearless & Red and a “Taylor’s Version” 1989 EP (2021). It seems nearly impossible with such a rich catalog that there is not at least one of her songs that nearly every person can relate to, and this includes some of the classic Disney couples.

Snow White and the Prince

Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)

Snow White was the first fairy tale told by Walt Disney as a full-length animated feature film and the first of the official Disney princesses. As such it is a classic love story; boy sees girl, love at first sight, they are tragically separated by dark outside forces and reunited when it seems like it is too late, but true love’s kiss breaks the curse, and the couple reunites to ride off to their castle and begin their happily-ever-after. And what describes that better than the song, “Love Story”?

“Love Story” Fearless (2008)

Love Story

We were both young when I first saw you
I close my eyes and the flashback starts
I’m standin’ there
On a balcony in summer air
See the lights, see the party, the ball gowns
See you make your way through the crowd
And say, “Hello”
Little did I know
That you were Romeo, you were throwin’ pebbles
And my daddy said, “Stay away from Juliet”
And I was cryin’ on the staircase
Beggin’ you, “Please don’t go, ” and I said
Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone
I’ll be waiting, all there’s left to do is run
You’ll be the prince and I’ll be the princess
It’s a love story, baby, just say, “Yes”
…Romeo, save me, they’re tryna tell me how to feel
This love is difficult, but it’s real
Don’t be afraid, we’ll make it out of this mess
It’s a love story, baby, just say, “Yes”
I got tired of waiting
Wonderin’ if you were ever comin’ around
My faith in you was fading
When I met you on the outskirts of town, and I said
Romeo, save me, I’ve been feeling so alone
I keep waiting for you, but you never come
Is this in my head? I don’t know what to think
He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring
And said, “Marry me, Juliet
You’ll never have to be alone
I love you and that’s all I really know
…go pick out a white dress
It’s a love story, baby, just say, “Yes”
…’Cause we were both young when I first saw you

Cinderella and Prince Charming

“Enchanted” Speak Now (2010)

Enchanted

There I was again tonight
Forcing laughter, faking smiles
Same old tired, lonely place
Walls of insincerity, shifting eyes and vacancy
Vanished when I saw your face…
Your eyes whispered, “Have we met?”
‘Cross the room your silhouette
Starts to make its way to me
The playful conversation starts
Counter all your quick remarks
Like passing notes in secrecy
And it was enchanting to meet you
All I can say is, I was enchanted to meet you…
The lingering question kept me up
2 AM, who do you love?
I wonder ’til I’m wide awake
And now I’m pacing back and forth
Wishing you were at my door
I’d open up and you would say, “Hey”
It was enchanting to meet you
All I know is, I was enchanted to meet you
…This is me praying that
This was the very first page
Not where the story line ends
My thoughts will echo your name, until I see you again
These are the words I held back, as I was leaving too soon
I was enchanted to meet you
…This night is sparkling, don’t you let it go
I’m wonderstruck, blushing all the way home
I’ll spend forever wondering if you knew
This night is flawless, don’t you let it go
I’m wonderstruck, dancing around all alone
I’ll spend forever wondering if you knew
I was enchanted to meet you
Please don’t be in love with someone else
Please don’t have somebody waiting on you.

Peter Pan and Wendy

Disney’s Peter Pan (1953)

The story of Peter Pan and Wendy is one that is often looked at as adventurous and whimsical. but it is also one of tragedy. But over the years Peter still returns to Wendy’s window, until one night she has finally grown up, and they both know it will be “The Last Time”.

“The Last Time” Red (2012)

The Last Time

Find myself at your door
Just like all those times before
I’m not sure how I got there
All roads, they lead me here
I imagine you are home
In your room, all alone
And you open your eyes into mine
And everything feels better
And right before your eyes
I’m breaking
No past, no reasons why
Just you and me…
You find yourself at my door
Just like all those times before
You wear your best apology
But I was there to watch you leave
And all the times I let you in
Just for you to go again
Disappear when you come back
Everything is better
And right before your eyes
I’m aching
Run fast, nowhere to hide
Just you and me…
This is the last time you tell me I’ve got it wrong
This is the last time I say it’s been you all along
This is the last time I let you in my door
This is the last time, I won’t hurt you anymore
…This is the last time I’m asking you this
Put my name at the top of your list
This is the last time I’m asking you why
You break my heart in the blink of an eye
This is the last time I’m asking you this
…Last time I’m asking you this

“Out of the Woods” 1989 (2014)

Out of the Woods

Looking at it now
It all seems so simple…
I remember
…The rest of the world was black and white
But we were in screaming color
And I remember thinking-
…Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods?
…Are we in the clear yet?
In the clear yet, good.
…Looking at it now
…We were built to fall apart
Then fall back together
(Back together)
Ooh, your necklace hanging from my neck
The night we couldn’t quite forget
When we decided, we decided
…we could dance
Baby, like we stood a chance
Two paper airplanes flying, flying, flying

And I remember thinking
…Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods?
…Are we in the clear yet?
In the clear yet, good.
…Remember when you hit the brakes too soon?
Twenty stitches in a hospital room
When you started crying, baby, I did too
But when the sun came up, I was looking at you
Remember when we couldn’t take the heat?
I walked out, I said “I’m setting you free”
But the monsters turned out to be just trees
When the sun came up you were looking at me
You were looking at me, oh
You were looking at me…
I remember
…Oh, I remember
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
In the clear yet, good

Ariel and Eric

“Delicate” Reputation (2017)

Delicate

…Dive bar on the East Side, where you at?
Phone lights up my nightstand in the black
Come here; you can meet me in the back
…look at you
Oh, damn, never seen that color blue
Just think of the fun things we could do…
Third floor on the West Side, me and you
Handsome, you’re a mansion with a view
Do the girls back home touch you like I do?
Long night with your hands up in my hair
Echoes of your footsteps on the stairs
Stay here, honey, I don’t want to share…
This ain’t for the best
My reputation’s never been worse, so
You must like me for me…
We can’t make any promises
Now can we, babe?
But you can make me a drink

…Sometimes I wonder; when you sleep
Are you ever dreaming of me?
Sometimes when I look into your eyes
I pretend you’re mine, all the damn time
‘Cause I like you

…Yeah, I want you
Is it cool that I said all that?
Is it too soon to do this yet?
‘Cause I know that it’s delicate…
Is it cool that I said all that? (Isn’t it?)
Is it chill that you’re in my head? (Isn’t it, isn’t it?)
‘Cause I know that it’s delicate
Isn’t it delicate?

Belle and the Beast

“Call It What You Want” Reputation (2017)

Call It What You Want

My castle crumbled overnight
I brought a knife to a gunfight
They took the crown, but it’s alright
All the liars are calling me one
Nobody’s heard from me for months
I’m doing better than I ever was…
All my flowers grew back as thorns
Windows boarded up after the storm
He built a fire just to keep me warm
All the drama queens taking swings
All the jokers dressin’ up as kings
They fade to nothing when I look at him
And I know I make the same mistakes every time
Bridges burn, I never learn, at least I did one thing right
I did one thing right
I’m laughing with my lover, making forts under covers
Trust him like a brother, yeah, you know I did one thing right
Starry eyes sparkin’ up my darkest night…
I want to wear his initial
On a chain round my neck, chain round my neck
Not because he owns me
But ’cause he really knows me
Which is more than they can say, I
I recall late November, holdin’ my breath
Slowly I said, “You don’t need to save me
But would you run away with me?”
Yes (would you run away?)
My baby’s fit like a daydream
Walking with his head down
I’m the one he’s walking to
So call it what you want, yeah, call it what you want to
My baby’s fly like a jet stream
High above the whole scene
Loves me like I’m brand new
So call it what you want, yeah, call it what you want to
Call it what you want, yeah
Call it what you want

Jasmine and Aladdin

Disney’s Aladdin (1992)

For a princess who has never been allowed to leave the protective walls of her palace, and has been presented with a litany of pompous princesses who wish to claim her as their bride, there is nothing as dangerous as falling for a common street rat. But when she is with Aladdin, Jasmine sees a whole new world, this is a “Treacherous ” path to tread, but she likes it that way.

“Treacherous” Red (2012)

Treacherous

Put your lips close to mine
As long as they don’t touch
Out of focus, eye to eye
‘Til the gravity’s too much
And I’ll do anything you say
If you say it with your hands
And I’d be smart to walk away
But you’re quicksand
…I can’t decide if it’s a choice
Getting swept away
I hear the sound of my own voice
Asking you to stay
And all we are is skin and bone
Trained to get along
Forever going with the flow
But you’re friction
This slope is treacherous
This path is reckless
This slope is treacherous
I, I, I like it
…Two headlights shine through the sleepless night
And I will get you, and get you alone
Your name has echoed through my mind
And I just think you should, think you should know
That nothing safe is worth the drive
And I would follow you, follow you home
I’ll follow you, follow you home
This hope is treacherous
This daydream is dangerous
This hope is treacherous
I, I, I…
This slope is treacherous
I, I, I like it

“This Love” 1989 (2014)

This Love

Clear blue water
High tide came and brought you in
And I could go on and on, on and on, and I will
Skies grew darker
Currents swept you out again
And you were just gone and gone, gone and gone
In silent screams
In wildest dreams
I never dreamed of this…
Tossing, turning
Struggled through the night with someone new
And I could go on and on, on and on
Lantern, burning
Flickered in the night, only you
But you were still gone, gone, gone
In losing grip
On sinking ships
You showed up just in time…
Your kiss, my cheek
I watched you leave
Your smile, my ghost
I fell to my knees
When you’re young, you just run
But you come back to what you need
This love is good
This love is bad
This love is alive back from the dead…
These hands had to let it go free, and
This love came back to me…
This love left a permanent mark
This love is glowing in the dark…
These hands had to let it go free, and
This love came back to me, oh, oh, oh…

Esmerelda and Phoebus

“The Archer” Lover (2019)

The Archer

Combat, I’m ready for combat
I say I don’t want that, but what if I do?
‘Cause cruelty wins in the movies
I’ve got a hundred thrown-out speeches I almost said to you
Easy they come, easy they go
I jump from the train, I ride off alone
I never grew up, it’s getting so old
Help me hold onto you…
Dark side, I search for your dark side
But what if I’m alright, right, right, right here?
And I cut off my nose just to spite my face
Then I hate my reflection for years and years
I wake in the night, I pace like a ghost
The room is on fire, invisible smoke
And all of my heroes die all alone
Help me hold onto you
I’ve been the archer,
I’ve been the prey
Screaming, who could ever leave me, darling?
But who could stay?
‘Cause they see right through me
They see right through me
They see right through
Can you see right through me?
They see right through
They see right through me
I see right through me
I see right through me
All the king’s horses, all the king’s men
Couldn’t put me together again
‘Cause all of my enemies started out friends
Help me hold onto you
I’ve been the archer
I’ve been the prey
Who could ever leave me, darling?
But who could stay?
…Who could stay?
You could stay
You could stay
You
Combat, I’m ready for combat

Megara and Hercules

Disney’s Hercules (1997)

Then all of a sudden here comes Wonderboy. She has to find his weakness and begins to sneak him away out the back gate, to spend time with him in secret. She can’t let herself admit what spending time with him makes her feel, she can’t say out loud that she’s in love with the big lug. It’s a cruel summer, and that’s the gospel truth.

“Cruel Summer” Lover (2019)

Cruel Summer

Fever dream high in the quiet of the night
You know that I caught it
Bad, bad boy
Shiny toy with a price
You know that I bought it
Killing me slow, out the window
I’m always waiting for you to be waiting below
Devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes
What doesn’t kill me makes me want you more…
Hang your head low
In the glow…
I’m not dying
You say that we’ll just screw it up in these trying times
We’re not trying
So cut the headlights, summer’s a knife
I’m always waiting for you just to cut to the bone
Devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes
And if I bleed, you’ll be the last to know…
I’m drunk in the back of the car
And I cried like a baby coming home from the bar (oh)
Said, “I’m fine, ” but it wasn’t true
I don’t wanna keep secrets just to keep you
And I snuck in through the garden gate
Every night that summer just to seal my fate (oh)
And I screamed for whatever it’s worth
“I love you, ” ain’t that the worst thing you ever heard?
He looks up grinning like a devil
It’s new, the shape of your body
It’s blue, the feeling I’ve got
And it’s ooh, whoa, oh
It’s a cruel summer
It’s cool, that’s what I tell ’em
No rules, in breakable heaven
But ooh, whoa, oh
It’s a cruel summer
With you…

“The Story of Us” Speak Now (2010)

The Story of Us

I used to think one day we’d tell the story of us
How we met, and the sparks flew instantly
People would say they’re the lucky ones
I used to know my place was a spot next to you
Now I’m searching the room for an empty seat
‘Cause lately I don’t even know what page you’re on
Oh, a simple complication
Miscommunications lead to fall out
So many things that I wish you knew
So many walls up, I can’t break through…
(Next chapter)
How’d we end up this way?
See me nervously pulling at my clothes and trying to look busy
And you’re doing your best to avoid me
I’m starting to think, one day, I’ll tell the story of us
How I was losing my mind when I saw you here
But you held your pride like you should’ve held me
Oh, I’m scared to see the ending
Why are we pretending this is nothing?
I’d tell you I miss you, but I don’t know how
I never heard silence quite this loud…
This is looking like a contest
Of who can act like they care less
But I liked it better when you were on my side
The battle’s in your hands now
But I would lay my armor down
If you say you’d rather love than fight
So many things that you wish I knew
But the story of us might be ending soon
Now I’m standing alone in a crowded room
And we’re not speaking
And I’m dying to know
Is it killing you like it’s killing me? Yeah
But I don’t know what to say
Since a twist of fate, when it all broke down
And the story of us looks a lot like a tragedy now, now, now
And we’re not speaking
And I’m dying to know
Is it killing you like it’s killing me? Yeah
I don’t know what to say
Since a twist of fate, ’cause we’re going down
And the story of us looks a lot like a tragedy now.
The End.

“Wildest Dreams” 1989 (2014)

Wildest Dreams

He said, “Let’s get out of this town
Drive out of the city, away from the crowds”
I thought heaven can’t help me now
Nothing lasts forever, but this is gonna take me down
He’s so tall and handsome as hell
He’s so bad but he does it so well
I can see the end as it begins
My one condition is…
I said, “No one has to know what we do”
His hands are in my hair, his clothes are in my room
And his voice is a familiar sound
Nothing lasts forever but this is getting good now
He’s so tall and handsome as hell
He’s so bad but he does it so well
And when we’ve had our very last kiss
My last request it is…
You’ll see me in hindsight
Tangled up with you all night
Burnin’ it down
Someday when you leave me
I bet these memories
Follow you around…
Say you’ll remember me standing in a nice dress
Staring at the sunset, babe
Red lips and rosy cheeks
Say you’ll see me again
Even if it’s just pretend
Say you’ll remember me standing in a nice dress
Staring at the sunset, babe
Red lips and rosy cheeks
Say you’ll see me again
Even if it’s just in your (Just pretend, just pretend)
Wildest dreams, ah-ha
In your wildest dreams, ah-ha
(Even if it’s just in your)
In your wildest dreams, ah-ha…

“Mine” Speak Now (2010)

Mine

You were in college, working part-time, waiting tables
Left a small town, never looked back
I was a flight risk, with a fear of fallin’
Wondering why we bother with love, if it never lasts
I say, “Can you believe it?”
As we’re lyin’ on the couch
The moment, I can see it
Yes, yes, I can see it now…
Flash forward, and we’re takin’ on the world together
And there’s a drawer of my things at your place
You learn my secrets and you figure out why I’m guarded
You say we’ll never make my parents’ mistakes
And we got bills to pay
We got nothin’ figured out
When it was hard to take
Yes, yes
This is what I thought about…
Do you remember, we were sittin’ there, by the water?
You put your arm around me, for the first time
You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter
You are the best thing, that’s ever been mine
Do you remember all the city lights on the water?
You saw me start to believe, for the first time
You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter
You are the best thing, that’s ever been mine…
And I remember that fight, two-thirty am
‘Cause everything was slipping right out of our hands
I ran out, crying, and you followed me out into the street
Braced myself for the goodbye,
‘Cause that’s all I’ve ever known
Then, you took me by surprise
You said, “I’ll never leave you alone”
You said, “I remember how we felt, sitting by the water
And every time I look at you, it’s like the first time
I fell in love with a careless man’s careful daughter
She is the best thing that’s ever been mine”
You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter
You are the best thing, that’s ever been mine
Do you believe it?
We’re gonna make it now
And I can see it
I can see it now.

“Cardigan” Folklore (2020)

Cardigan

Vintage tee, brand new phone
High heels on cobblestones
When you are young, they assume you know nothing
Sequin smile, black lipstick
Sensual politics
When you are young, they assume you know nothing
But I knew you
Dancin’ in your Levi’s
Drunk under a streetlight, I
I knew you
Hand under my sweatshirt
Baby, kiss it better, I
And when I felt like I was an old cardigan
Under someone’s bed
You put me on and said I was your favorite
A friend to all is a friend to none
Chase two girls, lose the one
When you are young, they assume you know nothin’
But I knew you
Playing hide-and-seek and
Giving me your weekends, I
I knew you
Your heartbeat on the High Line
Once in 20 lifetimes, I
And when I felt like I was an old cardigan
Under someone’s bed
You put me on and said I was your favorite
To kiss in cars and downtown bars
Was all we needed
You drew stars around my scars
But now I’m bleedin’
‘Cause I knew you
Steppin’ on the last train
Marked me like a bloodstain, I
I knew you
Tried to change the ending
Peter losing Wendy, I
I knew you
Leavin’ like a father
Running like water, I
And when you are young, they assume you know nothing
But I knew you’d linger like a tattoo kiss
I knew you’d haunt all of my what-ifs
The smell of smoke would hang around this long
‘Cause I knew everything when I was young
I knew I’d curse you for the longest time
Chasin’ shadows in the grocery line
I knew you’d miss me once the thrill expired
And you’d be standin’ in my front porch light
And I knew you’d come back to me
You’d come back to me
And you’d come back to me
And you’d come back
And when I felt like I was an old cardigan
Under someone’s bed
You put me on and said I was your favorite

“Champagne Problems” Evermore (2020)

Champagne Problems

You booked the night train for a reason
So you could sit there in this hurt
Bustling crowds or silent sleepers
You’re not sure which is worse
Because I dropped your hand while dancing
Left you out there standing
Crestfallen on the landing
Champagne problems
Your mom’s ring in your pocket
My picture in your wallet
Your heart was glass, I dropped it
Champagne problems
You told your family for a reason
You couldn’t keep it in
Your sister splashed out on the bottle
Now no one’s celebrating
Dom Pérignon, you brought it
No crowd of friends applauded
Your hometown skeptics called it
Champagne problems
You had a speech, you’re speechless
Love slipped beyond your reaches
And I couldn’t give a reason
Champagne problems
Your Midas touch on the Chevy door
November flush and your flannel cure
“This dorm was once a madhouse”
I made a joke, “Well, it’s made for me”
How evergreen, our group of friends
Don’t think we’ll say that word again
And soon they’ll have the nerve to deck the halls
That we once walked through
One for the money, two for the show
I never was ready, so I watch you go
Sometimes you just don’t know the answer
‘Til someone’s on their knees and asks you
“She would’ve made such a lovely bride
What a shame she’s fucked in her head, ” they said
But you’ll find the real thing instead
She’ll patch up your tapestry that I shred
And hold your hand while dancing
Never leave you standing
Crestfallen on the landing
With champagne problems
Your mom’s ring in your pocket
Her picture in your wallet
You won’t remember all my
Champagne problems
You won’t remember all my
Champagne problems.
