Walt Disney Studios has been telling some of our favorite fairy tale love stories since they first began their venture into full-length films in 1937. We have all grown up watching many once upon a times, true love’s kisses, and happily ever afters presented with Walt Disney’s gorgeous animation and trademark storytelling. Meanwhile singer/songwriter Taylor Swift has been writing some of the greatest songs of love and heartbreak since she first entered the business with her debut album at the age of 17.
She has since released 9 studio albums Taylor Swift (2006), Fearless (2008), Speak Now (2010), Red (2012), 1989 (2014), Reputation (2017), Lover (2019), Folklore & Evermore (2020). She also recorded additional “Taylor’s Version” re-releases of Fearless & Red and a “Taylor’s Version” 1989 EP (2021). It seems nearly impossible with such a rich catalog that there is not at least one of her songs that nearly every person can relate to, and this includes some of the classic Disney couples.
Snow White and the Prince
Snow White was the first fairy tale told by Walt Disney as a full-length animated feature film and the first of the official Disney princesses. As such it is a classic love story; boy sees girl, love at first sight, they are tragically separated by dark outside forces and reunited when it seems like it is too late, but true love’s kiss breaks the curse, and the couple reunites to ride off to their castle and begin their happily-ever-after. And what describes that better than the song, “Love Story”?
Love Story
I close my eyes and the flashback starts
I’m standin’ there
On a balcony in summer air
See the lights, see the party, the ball gowns
See you make your way through the crowd
And say, “Hello”
Little did I know
And my daddy said, “Stay away from Juliet”
And I was cryin’ on the staircase
Beggin’ you, “Please don’t go, ” and I said
I’ll be waiting, all there’s left to do is run
You’ll be the prince and I’ll be the princess
It’s a love story, baby, just say, “Yes”
…Romeo, save me, they’re tryna tell me how to feel
This love is difficult, but it’s real
Don’t be afraid, we’ll make it out of this mess
It’s a love story, baby, just say, “Yes”
Wonderin’ if you were ever comin’ around
My faith in you was fading
When I met you on the outskirts of town, and I said
I keep waiting for you, but you never come
Is this in my head? I don’t know what to think
He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring
And said, “Marry me, Juliet
You’ll never have to be alone
I love you and that’s all I really know
…go pick out a white dress
It’s a love story, baby, just say, “Yes”
…’Cause we were both young when I first saw you
Cinderella and Prince Charming
Cinderella and her prince fall in love on one magical night when neither of them is expecting to find the one. But when the Prince sees Cinderella walk across the room, he must make his way across the ballroom to meet her. They dance talk and somehow feel something they never felt. But she must leave far too soon when the clock strikes twelve, and though she thinks she will never see him again, she dances on her own in her small attic room remembering her “Enchanted” night.
Enchanted
Forcing laughter, faking smiles
Same old tired, lonely place
Walls of insincerity, shifting eyes and vacancy
Vanished when I saw your face…
‘Cross the room your silhouette
Starts to make its way to me
The playful conversation starts
Counter all your quick remarks
Like passing notes in secrecy
All I can say is, I was enchanted to meet you…
2 AM, who do you love?
I wonder ’til I’m wide awake
And now I’m pacing back and forth
Wishing you were at my door
I’d open up and you would say, “Hey”
All I know is, I was enchanted to meet you
This was the very first page
Not where the story line ends
My thoughts will echo your name, until I see you again
These are the words I held back, as I was leaving too soon
I was enchanted to meet you
I’m wonderstruck, blushing all the way home
I’ll spend forever wondering if you knew
This night is flawless, don’t you let it go
I’m wonderstruck, dancing around all alone
I’ll spend forever wondering if you knew
I was enchanted to meet you
Please don’t have somebody waiting on you.
Peter Pan and Wendy
The story of Peter Pan and Wendy is one that is often looked at as adventurous and whimsical. but it is also one of tragedy. Peter Pan is the boy who will never grow up, and though Wendy dreams of being whisked off to Neverland, she knows her place is ultimately at home with her family. But over the years Peter still returns to Wendy’s window, until one night she has finally grown up, and they both know it will be “The Last Time”.
The Last Time
Just like all those times before
I’m not sure how I got there
All roads, they lead me here
I imagine you are home
In your room, all alone
And you open your eyes into mine
And everything feels better
I’m breaking
No past, no reasons why
Just you and me…
Just like all those times before
You wear your best apology
But I was there to watch you leave
And all the times I let you in
Just for you to go again
Disappear when you come back
Everything is better
I’m aching
Run fast, nowhere to hide
Just you and me…
This is the last time I say it’s been you all along
This is the last time I let you in my door
This is the last time, I won’t hurt you anymore
Put my name at the top of your list
This is the last time I’m asking you why
You break my heart in the blink of an eye
…Last time I’m asking you this
Aurora and Phillip
Aurora and Phillip have a whirlwind romance, one that the young Briar Rose had always wished for. Together they met in the wood, danced, and promised to meet again. But soon Rose learned her true destiny as the lost Princess, long betrothed to another. She is compelled to the castle and then compelled to fulfill the curse of the evil Maleficent. Phillip must fight through the thorns and slay the dragon to reach his true love and save the kingdom. And through it all, in the dreams of her death-like sleep, Aurora asks herself, “Are we out of the woods yet?”
Out of the Woods
It all seems so simple…
I remember
But we were in screaming color
And I remember thinking-
Are we out of the woods?
In the clear yet, good.
…We were built to fall apart
Then fall back together
(Back together)
The night we couldn’t quite forget
When we decided, we decided
…we could dance
Baby, like we stood a chance
Two paper airplanes flying, flying, flying
Are we out of the woods?
In the clear yet, good.
Twenty stitches in a hospital room
When you started crying, baby, I did too
But when the sun came up, I was looking at you
I walked out, I said “I’m setting you free”
But the monsters turned out to be just trees
When the sun came up you were looking at me
You were looking at me…
…Oh, I remember
Are we out of the woods?
Are we in the clear yet?
In the clear yet, good
Ariel and Eric
Ariel sees Prince Eric from afar and is immediately taken by the tall handsome prince with ocean blue eyes. And she is willing to make a deal with a great price if it means she has a chance to be with him. Like many of us when we are overwhelmed by the feelings for a new someone, she has so many thoughts running through her head that she is unable to say. With only a few days to prove their love is true, the situation for the Little Mermaid is “Delicate” to say the least.
Delicate
Phone lights up my nightstand in the black
Come here; you can meet me in the back
Oh, damn, never seen that color blue
Just think of the fun things we could do…
Handsome, you’re a mansion with a view
Do the girls back home touch you like I do?
Echoes of your footsteps on the stairs
Stay here, honey, I don’t want to share…
My reputation’s never been worse, so
You must like me for me…
Now can we, babe?
But you can make me a drink
…Sometimes I wonder; when you sleep
Are you ever dreaming of me?
Sometimes when I look into your eyes
I pretend you’re mine, all the damn time
‘Cause I like you
Is it too soon to do this yet?
‘Cause I know that it’s delicate…
Is it chill that you’re in my head? (Isn’t it, isn’t it?)
‘Cause I know that it’s delicate
Isn’t it delicate?
Belle and the Beast
Belle has always been judged in the small village where she grew up for being different, and after turning down a marriage proposal from the village’s beloved Gaston she is seen as just plain crazy. But when the adventure in the great wide somewhere calls us to the mysterious castle of a beast, she comes to see the man inside. It is the kind of love she knows that none of the others could understand, but they can “Call it what they want to.”
Call It What You Want
I brought a knife to a gunfight
They took the crown, but it’s alright
All the liars are calling me one
Nobody’s heard from me for months
I’m doing better than I ever was…
Windows boarded up after the storm
He built a fire just to keep me warm
All the drama queens taking swings
All the jokers dressin’ up as kings
They fade to nothing when I look at him
And I know I make the same mistakes every time
Bridges burn, I never learn, at least I did one thing right
I did one thing right
I’m laughing with my lover, making forts under covers
Trust him like a brother, yeah, you know I did one thing right
Starry eyes sparkin’ up my darkest night…
On a chain round my neck, chain round my neck
Not because he owns me
But ’cause he really knows me
Which is more than they can say, I
I recall late November, holdin’ my breath
Slowly I said, “You don’t need to save me
But would you run away with me?”
Yes (would you run away?)
Walking with his head down
I’m the one he’s walking to
So call it what you want, yeah, call it what you want to
My baby’s fly like a jet stream
High above the whole scene
Loves me like I’m brand new
So call it what you want, yeah, call it what you want to
Call it what you want
To
Jasmine and Aladdin
For a princess who has never been allowed to leave the protective walls of her palace, and has been presented with a litany of pompous princesses who wish to claim her as their bride, there is nothing as dangerous as falling for a common street rat. But when she is with Aladdin, Jasmine sees a whole new world, this is a “Treacherous ” path to tread, but she likes it that way.
Treacherous
As long as they don’t touch
Out of focus, eye to eye
‘Til the gravity’s too much
And I’ll do anything you say
If you say it with your hands
And I’d be smart to walk away
But you’re quicksand
Getting swept away
I hear the sound of my own voice
Asking you to stay
And all we are is skin and bone
Trained to get along
Forever going with the flow
But you’re friction
This path is reckless
This slope is treacherous
I, I, I like it
And I will get you, and get you alone
Your name has echoed through my mind
And I just think you should, think you should know
That nothing safe is worth the drive
And I would follow you, follow you home
I’ll follow you, follow you home
This daydream is dangerous
This hope is treacherous
I, I, I…
I, I, I like it
Pocahontas and John Smith
Pocahontas and John Smith are another tragic couple. The clear blue waters of the ocean and the strange clouds brought Smith and his company into the world of Pocahontas. But almost as soon as he came into her world and changed her forever, the tide pulled him away again. When she is able to go to his home in England she feels drawn to another, but as she tries to move on she unexpectedly meets Smith, drawn to “this love that came back” once again.
This Love
High tide came and brought you in
And I could go on and on, on and on, and I will
Skies grew darker
Currents swept you out again
And you were just gone and gone, gone and gone
In wildest dreams
I never dreamed of this…
Struggled through the night with someone new
And I could go on and on, on and on
Lantern, burning
Flickered in the night, only you
But you were still gone, gone, gone
On sinking ships
You showed up just in time…
I watched you leave
Your smile, my ghost
I fell to my knees
When you’re young, you just run
But you come back to what you need
This love is bad
This love is alive back from the dead…
These hands had to let it go free, and
This love came back to me…
This love left a permanent mark
This love is glowing in the dark…
These hands had to let it go free, and
This love came back to me, oh, oh, oh…
Esmerelda and Phoebus
Esmerelda grew up on the streets, as a gypsy persecuted by those around her, learning to be fiercely independent for her own protection. When she meets Phoebus for the first time, she is naturally combative, though she cannot deny she is also drawn to the charming soldier who seems like he could be different from all the rest. But every man who she ever met has wanted her, it’s nothing new that another is trying to get close to her, but could he be the one who stays?
The Archer
I say I don’t want that, but what if I do?
‘Cause cruelty wins in the movies
I’ve got a hundred thrown-out speeches I almost said to you
I jump from the train, I ride off alone
I never grew up, it’s getting so old
Help me hold onto you…
But what if I’m alright, right, right, right here?
And I cut off my nose just to spite my face
Then I hate my reflection for years and years
The room is on fire, invisible smoke
And all of my heroes die all alone
Help me hold onto you
I’ve been the prey
Screaming, who could ever leave me, darling?
But who could stay?
They see right through me
They see right through
Can you see right through me?
They see right through
They see right through me
I see right through me
I see right through me
Couldn’t put me together again
‘Cause all of my enemies started out friends
Help me hold onto you
I’ve been the prey
Who could ever leave me, darling?
But who could stay?
…Who could stay?
You could stay
You could stay
You
Megara and Hercules
Megara has been drawn to the wrong guys before, the bad boys, and she paid the price for it. She had been used as a tool to charm men for Hades’ advantage since. Then all of a sudden here comes Wonderboy. She has to find his weakness and begins to sneak him away out the back gate, to spend time with him in secret. She can’t let herself admit what spending time with him makes her feel, she can’t say out loud that she’s in love with the big lug. It’s a cruel summer, and that’s the gospel truth.
Cruel Summer
You know that I caught it
Bad, bad boy
Shiny toy with a price
You know that I bought it
I’m always waiting for you to be waiting below
Devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes
What doesn’t kill me makes me want you more…
In the glow…
I’m not dying
You say that we’ll just screw it up in these trying times
We’re not trying
I’m always waiting for you just to cut to the bone
Devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes
And if I bleed, you’ll be the last to know…
And I cried like a baby coming home from the bar (oh)
Said, “I’m fine, ” but it wasn’t true
I don’t wanna keep secrets just to keep you
And I snuck in through the garden gate
Every night that summer just to seal my fate (oh)
And I screamed for whatever it’s worth
“I love you, ” ain’t that the worst thing you ever heard?
He looks up grinning like a devil
It’s blue, the feeling I’ve got
And it’s ooh, whoa, oh
It’s a cruel summer
It’s cool, that’s what I tell ’em
No rules, in breakable heaven
But ooh, whoa, oh
It’s a cruel summer
With you…
Mulan and Shang
Mulan and Shang have a relationship of push and pull, they are fighting on the same side but Shang’s rigid leadership style constantly puts her down, they are undeniably attracted to one another but neither can possibly acknowledge that in a time of war, and even after she saves the life of her entire company finding out she is a woman is a crime Shang cannot ignore- ultimately sparing her from execution but leaving her to die alone in the snow as his trust is broken. And even after they save all of China and Mulan is praised as a hero by the emperor, Shang cannot bring himself to say the words he really feels. Mulan wonders to herself if the “Story of Us” is in fact a tragedy.
The Story of Us
How we met, and the sparks flew instantly
People would say they’re the lucky ones
I used to know my place was a spot next to you
Now I’m searching the room for an empty seat
‘Cause lately I don’t even know what page you’re on
Miscommunications lead to fall out
So many things that I wish you knew
So many walls up, I can’t break through…
See me nervously pulling at my clothes and trying to look busy
And you’re doing your best to avoid me
I’m starting to think, one day, I’ll tell the story of us
How I was losing my mind when I saw you here
But you held your pride like you should’ve held me
Why are we pretending this is nothing?
I’d tell you I miss you, but I don’t know how
I never heard silence quite this loud…
Of who can act like they care less
But I liked it better when you were on my side
The battle’s in your hands now
But I would lay my armor down
If you say you’d rather love than fight
So many things that you wish I knew
But the story of us might be ending soon
And we’re not speaking
And I’m dying to know
Is it killing you like it’s killing me? Yeah
But I don’t know what to say
Since a twist of fate, when it all broke down
And the story of us looks a lot like a tragedy now, now, now
And I’m dying to know
Is it killing you like it’s killing me? Yeah
I don’t know what to say
Since a twist of fate, ’cause we’re going down
And the story of us looks a lot like a tragedy now.

Wildest Dreams
Drive out of the city, away from the crowds”
I thought heaven can’t help me now
Nothing lasts forever, but this is gonna take me down
He’s so bad but he does it so well
I can see the end as it begins
His hands are in my hair, his clothes are in my room
And his voice is a familiar sound
Nothing lasts forever but this is getting good now
He’s so bad but he does it so well
And when we’ve had our very last kiss
My last request it is…
Tangled up with you all night
Burnin’ it down
Someday when you leave me
I bet these memories
Follow you around…
Staring at the sunset, babe
Red lips and rosy cheeks
Say you’ll see me again
Even if it’s just pretend
Staring at the sunset, babe
Red lips and rosy cheeks
Say you’ll see me again
Even if it’s just in your (Just pretend, just pretend)
Wildest dreams, ah-ha
In your wildest dreams, ah-ha
(Even if it’s just in your)
In your wildest dreams, ah-ha…
Tiana and Naveen
The love story of Tiana and Naveen is deeply wholesome. After being a privileged prince for his entire life before being unceremoniously cut off, and wishing nothing more than to marry rich and return to a life of frivolous luxury, meeting Tiana teaches him the value of hard work. And more than that- gives him something he wants to work for to make her dream come true. After Tiana’s father died without fulfilling the dream of owning his own restaurant, she focused her whole life on trying to make that a reality, but meeting Naveen teaches her there is more to life than what we do- it’s who we love. After all, they have been through they can look at each other and say, “You are the best thing that’s ever been mine.”
Mine
Left a small town, never looked back
I was a flight risk, with a fear of fallin’
Wondering why we bother with love, if it never lasts
As we’re lyin’ on the couch
The moment, I can see it
Yes, yes, I can see it now…
And there’s a drawer of my things at your place
You learn my secrets and you figure out why I’m guarded
You say we’ll never make my parents’ mistakes
We got nothin’ figured out
When it was hard to take
Yes, yes
This is what I thought about…
You put your arm around me, for the first time
You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter
You are the best thing, that’s ever been mine
You saw me start to believe, for the first time
You made a rebel of a careless man’s careful daughter
You are the best thing, that’s ever been mine…
‘Cause everything was slipping right out of our hands
I ran out, crying, and you followed me out into the street
‘Cause that’s all I’ve ever known
Then, you took me by surprise
You said, “I’ll never leave you alone”
And every time I look at you, it’s like the first time
I fell in love with a careless man’s careful daughter
She is the best thing that’s ever been mine”
You are the best thing, that’s ever been mine
We’re gonna make it now
And I can see it

Cardigan
High heels on cobblestones
When you are young, they assume you know nothing
Sensual politics
When you are young, they assume you know nothing
Dancin’ in your Levi’s
Drunk under a streetlight, I
I knew you
Hand under my sweatshirt
Baby, kiss it better, I
Under someone’s bed
You put me on and said I was your favorite
Chase two girls, lose the one
When you are young, they assume you know nothin’
Playing hide-and-seek and
Giving me your weekends, I
I knew you
Your heartbeat on the High Line
Once in 20 lifetimes, I
Under someone’s bed
You put me on and said I was your favorite
Was all we needed
You drew stars around my scars
But now I’m bleedin’
Steppin’ on the last train
Marked me like a bloodstain, I
I knew you
Tried to change the ending
Peter losing Wendy, I
I knew you
Leavin’ like a father
Running like water, I
And when you are young, they assume you know nothing
I knew you’d haunt all of my what-ifs
The smell of smoke would hang around this long
‘Cause I knew everything when I was young
I knew I’d curse you for the longest time
I knew you’d miss me once the thrill expired
And you’d be standin’ in my front porch light
And I knew you’d come back to me
You’d come back to me
And you’d come back to me
And you’d come back
Under someone’s bed
You put me on and said I was your favorite

Champagne Problems
So you could sit there in this hurt
Bustling crowds or silent sleepers
You’re not sure which is worse
Left you out there standing
Crestfallen on the landing
Champagne problems
My picture in your wallet
Your heart was glass, I dropped it
Champagne problems
You couldn’t keep it in
Your sister splashed out on the bottle
Now no one’s celebrating
No crowd of friends applauded
Your hometown skeptics called it
Champagne problems
Love slipped beyond your reaches
And I couldn’t give a reason

November flush and your flannel cure
“This dorm was once a madhouse”
I made a joke, “Well, it’s made for me”
Don’t think we’ll say that word again
And soon they’ll have the nerve to deck the halls
That we once walked through
I never was ready, so I watch you go
Sometimes you just don’t know the answer
‘Til someone’s on their knees and asks you
What a shame she’s fucked in her head, ” they said
But you’ll find the real thing instead
She’ll patch up your tapestry that I shred
Never leave you standing
Crestfallen on the landing
With champagne problems
Her picture in your wallet
You won’t remember all my
