Fans of Maverick, Goose, and Iceman have been rejoicing as the long-awaited Top Gun sequel finally hit theaters on Memorial Day, and the Top Gun 2 movie is still breaking records even 18 days after its premiere in theaters. The fighter pilot-themed film from Paramount and Skydance already beat a record that Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End had held for 15 years — and now it has beaten a Marvel record for 2022!
Top Gun: Maverick brings Tom Cruise back to his iconic role as the rebellious fighter pilot Maverick, who takes to the skies and maneuvers fighter jets with both skill and daring. In the original Top Gun movie, Maverick was at odds with the more disciplined fighter pilot Iceman (played by Val Kilmer) — but in Top Gun: Maverick, a slew of new characters and a more substantial plot is presented, which has resulted in very positive reviews from audiences.
The Marvel movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was one of the most highly-anticipated films of 2022, with its new horror style shocking many viewers and its box office takings coming to around $398.1 million, but Doctor Stephen Strange has just lost his title for “the top-grossing domestic film of 2022 so far”. The Top Gun sequel has booted Dr. Strange and his flying cape out of the sky with ticket sales equalling $401.8 million!
Top Gun: Maverick did lose when it came to ticket sales between June 10 and June 12 due to the introduction of Jurassic World Dominion, (which took $145.1 million on its opening weekend) — but the fact that the movie has beaten Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean movie and Marvel’s new Doctor Strange movie has many viewers shocked! Top Gun: Maverick has also almost beat Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s record on a global scale as a pandemic-era film.
