Airlines Ban Lightsabers Ahead of ‘Star Wars’ Celebration

A recent guest report has highlighted a significant change in JetBlue’s carry-on policies: effective immediately, the airline no longer permits lightsabers as carry-on items. A traveler shared their experience on social media, stating: “PSA: JetBlue not allowing lightsabers on anymore. Like literally today. So got to flight and couldn’t bring it on.”

Policy Change Details

While JetBlue’s official website does not explicitly mention lightsabers, it does provide guidelines on prohibited items. According to their policy, prohibited items include weapons, explosives, incendiaries, and items that may be used as weapons. Though lightsabers are typically considered toys, their size and design may have led to this recent restriction.

Underneath this report on Facebook, another person commented on a similar struggle, saying:

We flew home with 2 last week on Delta. The flight attendants stored it at the front of the plane for us and gave them back to us at the end of the flight.

Recommendations for Travelers

Given this policy change, travelers planning to bring lightsabers on JetBlue flights should consider the following:

  • Check with the Airline: Before traveling, contact your airline to confirm their current policy on carrying lightsabers.
  • Disassemble the Lightsaber: If permitted, disassemble the lightsaber into its components to reduce its size and facilitate easier storage.

  • Check Item and Use the Provided Carrying Case: It may be best to put your saber in a checked bag. Utilize the carrying case provided at the time of purchase, as it is designed to protect the lightsaber during transit.
  • Consider Shipping: For peace of mind, consider shipping the lightsaber home from the park, a service offered by Disney for a fee.

Travelers are advised to plan accordingly to avoid any inconvenience at the airport. While this reported policy change comes as a shock to many, it could be correlated to the large amounts of Star Wars fans travelling during the Season of the Force, specifically for May the 4th. Hopefully, some clarity on this policy shift will be revealed soon.
