The new Disney Legend and Frozen star Idina Menzel is getting her own documentary on the streaming service Disney+ — so if you’re a huge fan of musicals, musical theater, and singing, then you will definitely want to tune in! Idina Menzel became recognizable in the Disney community after her first time voicing the Disney princess Elsa in the 2012 Frozen film, and after playing the role again for the rest of the content in the Norway-based musical franchise (and yes, she is still hoping for Frozen 3).
Now, Idina Menzel has just become a Disney Legend during the 2022 D23 Expo in Anaheim as well — but she was famous in certain circles (like Broadway) far before playing a Disney princess, and this documentary will dive into that backstory!
According to Hollywood Reporter, the Tony Award winner Idina Menzel is going to be the focus of a new documentary called Which Way to the Stage?. This documentary will be focused on “chronicling Menzel’s career in theater and film and culminating in her headlining concert at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.”
Idina Menzel first gained a big Broadway fanbase after playing Maureen Johnson in Rent (and starring in the movie version) and playing the Wicked Witch Elphaba in Wicked. She also had Broadway roles in shows like Aida and If/Then, but it was her rendition of the original power baleld called “Let It Go” that made both the singer and her Disney princess character famous.
“Let it Go” was an enormous success — even though it has since then been overtaken by the song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from Encanto — and the song is still considered to be iconic.
Since Idina Menzel was recently honored with a Disney Legend award alongside three of her Frozen co-stars (Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff, and Josh Gad), she was already on Disney Fanatics’ minds. Now, the Broadway veteran, singer, and star will be both on Disney fans’ minds and on their screens as of December 9, when the Which Way to the Stage? documentary starts streaming on Disney+!
