During the 2022 D23 Legends Awards Ceremony new inductee Idina Menzel of Frozen fame surprised Guests when she broke out into an annotated rendition of the iconic Disney Classic song “When You Wish Upon A Star.” We have the video below:
First featured in Disney’s Pinocchio back in 1940, this song has gone on to be one of several of the most familiar Disney melodies of all time.
Menzel’s decision to break out into such a song is most befitting in more ways than one. Not only is it in par with Disney’s new release of the live-action version of Pinocchio, which premiered on Disney+ only yesterday, but it speaks the very real sentiments on the concept of being named as a Disney Legend being a dream come true. What’s more, Idina Menzel has made a name for herself as a singer even long before her tenure at Disney, with such credits that include, Rent, Wicked, and many other hits. But on the Disney front, her most iconic role to date has been providing both the speaking and singing voice of Queen Elsa in the highly popular Frozen film franchise.
Idina Menzel was honored as a Disney Legend alongside fellow Frozen alums Kristen Bell (voice of Anna), Jonathan Groff (Kristoff), and Josh Gad (Olaf) at the D23 Expo Awards Ceremony on September 9. In addition to this “cool” new ensemble, many other new inductees received the same said honor. The newest honorees to join the ranks of this most distinguishable Disney honor on this day include Anthony Anderson, Chadwick Boseman, Rob’t Coltrin, Patrick Dempsey, Robert Price “Bob” Foster, Don Hahn, Doris Hardoon, Chris Montan, Ellen Pompeo, and Tracee Ellis Ross.
The naming of Disney Legends is a tradition going back 30 years. It honors great names throughout the history of the Walt Disney Company, including actors, entertainers, cast members, imagineers, and others who have played a contributing role in spreading the magic.
