Ostensibly fed up with Disney’s current MO, a fan suggested Twitter and Tesla CEO Elon Musk buy the Mouse House!

The Elon Musk-Walt Disney Company controversy recently swept the internet when the Tesla CEO cussed out Disney for supposedly trying to “bully” X, formerly known as Twitter, with money. After a recent controversy where Mr. Musk supported an antisemitic comment made on Elon Musks’s X, Disney (among other companies) decided to part ways with the company, and Mr. Musk did not take kindly to the departure.

Elon Musk Calls Out Disney’s Hypocrisy

In a post from December 2, X owner Elon Musk shared a graph that depicted the relationship between platform usage and anti-Semitic or Anti-Israel views, and which demonstrated that platforms like TikTok and Instagram purportedly had higher instances of anti-semitic views and hate speech than X did, yet Disney was “boycotting X” and “spending millions” on other platforms.

This came after Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that despite the fact that he admired and respected what Elon Musk had accomplished, the CEO’s recent comments meant it was time for Disney to distance itself. Mr. Iger explained, “I have a lot of respect for Elon and what he has accomplished,” Iger said. However, given “the position [Musk] took, in quite a public manner,” Disney concluded that its association with Musk and X/Twitter was “not necessarily a positive one for us.”

Many fans online were sympathetic to the views Mr. Musk espoused on his platform. One even went so far as to say “You are worth more than Disney. Buy ‘em and turn them into Twitter.”

Another commented on how this was not a reflection of X, but a reflection of the death of free speech. They shared, “Because free speech is more dangerous to tyrants than anything else.”

A third agreed with this sentiment, “It’s not about boycotting hate, it’s about boycotting Elon Musk and Free speech. Thank you for buying X Elon.”

X CEO Linda Yaccarino also seemed to support Mr. Musk’s and X users’ sentiments in a post on the platform hours later. She wrote, “X is enabling an information independence that’s uncomfortable for some people. We’re a platform that allows people to make their own decisions.”

Yaccarino continued, “And here’s my perspective when it comes to advertising: X is standing at a unique and amazing intersection of Free Speech and Main Street — and the X community is powerful and is here to welcome you. To our partners who believe in our meaningful work — Thank You.”

Others also took the time to highlight Disney’s ostensible hypocrisy in this situation, illustrating Elon Musk’s point about hate speech on other platforms with an example. One fan commented,

Literally shaking. The same day a report comes out that TikTok is the main driver of antisemitism on social media, I get a @Disney ad on TikTok. .@RobertIger since we know you’re very concerned with your ads appearing near antisemitic content, I thought you would want to know about this. @mmfa feel free to reach out to me for comment when you write up this story about @Disney ’s ads on TikTok urging them to stop advertising on the platform.”

Ultimately, it appears Disney has made its decision and it looks like the Mouse House will not be going back on any of it, no matter how upset Mr. Musk is about these developments.

And as for whether Mr. Musk will buy Disney, at the moment, that outcome seems incredibly unlikely.
