Despite Disney CEO Bob Iger’s statement last year that Disney was entering a new era of building, it appears Disney’s Pixar is going through another round of sizeable layoffs.

The Walt Disney Company saw a year characterized by restructuring, downsizing, and a lot of cuts (be those budget or workforce) in 2023. In fact, when Bob Iger came back to take the helm, one of the promises he made was that he was going to cut spending by $5.5 billion. It’s no easy task, and Mr. Iger managed it.

However, at the end of last year, while speaking with Disney employees, Bob Iger said that the company was through a tough stage and was finally moving forward to a “new era of building.” Unfortunately, his words have not rung quite true.

Pixar Animation Studios Preps to Cut Jobs Once Again

As Reuters reported, now that Disney’s Pixar studio has completed a few projects in its pipeline, it officially has more staff than it needs and so will be firing some employees. The article explained that earlier this year, it was rumored that “Pixar was set to undergo layoffs as high as 20% this year, with the studio’s team of 1,300 people reduced to under 1,000 over the coming months.”

However, Reuters‘ source disputed the rumor and said that Pixar had not yet decided how many employees would be impacted by this new round of layoffs. The source also added that the job cuts would not impact Pixar’s theatrical output.

This set of layoffs comes after 4000 impacted employees lost their jobs at Disney last year, and 3000 jobs were cut entirely. At the time, the layoffs were referred to as a bloodbath, and many reported that there was a “sense of foreboding” at the office.

When it came to Pixar, in June last year, Pixar eliminated 75 positions, including firing executives who were a part of the team behind box office disappointment Lightyear. At the time, this was the studio’s first significant job cut in a decade.
