This Controversial Disney Menu Item Is Causing a Stir Online

Magic Kingdom Park’s new Beak and Barrel restaurant and bar has already become a point of conversation—not just for its stylish design or creative cocktails, but for one particular menu item: Kraken’s Catch. The dish, which features “Octopus Tentacles marinated in Lemon and Lime Juice with Olives, Bell Peppers, Avocado, and Piquillo Pepper-Almond Foam,” has sparked strong reactions across social media, with some guests questioning the appropriateness of serving octopus at a family-focused theme park.

Gourmet or Inhumane?

The discussion centers around whether it is ethical to serve such an intelligent species as part of a dining experience. One fan on social media wrote: “Eating one of these is like eating the leg of a dog. How many are being prepped and served a day. Dozens of dead 🐙. Octopus are very intelligent. Like smarter than your toddler and golden retriever put together. So it’s a little weird eating intelligent life at Disney World.” Another user chimed in: “Thank you! That was exactly my reaction when I heard about this. It's so unpleasant to think about 😟”

Despite the backlash, Beak and Barrel has kept Kraken’s Catch on the menu. The restaurant continues to market itself as a destination for adventurous palates, offering both inventive seafood dishes and cocktails designed to complement the immersive dining experience. Fans visiting Magic Kingdom are drawn to the bold flavor combinations and themed atmosphere, even as conversations around certain menu items gain traction online.

Will Disney Comment?

Disney has not commented on the controversy or provided details regarding the sourcing of the octopus. Still, the debate demonstrates how even a single dish can ignite broader discussions about animal intelligence, ethics, and guest expectations in theme park dining.

As the park continues to expand its culinary offerings, dishes like Kraken’s Catch highlight the delicate balance between creativity and audience sensitivity. The conversation on social media suggests that guests are increasingly willing to weigh culinary curiosity against their own ethical considerations—keeping Kraken’s Catch at the center of Disney dining debates for the foreseeable future.

One Comment

  1. Lighten up! If it offends you, don’t order it! Don’t try to have removed from the menu. Other guests may want to try it. If no one orders this dish, it will not remain on the menu for long.
