While more often than not, we have magical and wonderful news to report from the Disney Parks, occasionally, there is news of a more somber nature to share. That is the case with this story today of a former cast member from Tokyo Disneyland who sued the Disney Park for damages.

As The Japan Times reported, “A Japanese court on Tuesday rejected a damages claim seeking ¥3.85 million ($27,100) from the operator of Tokyo Disneyland by a former performer, who said she had suffered work-related injuries and that the company had failed to fulfill its duty of care.”
The cast member explained in the suit that she was hired in February 2015 by Oriental Land. She appeared in shows and parades wearing character costumes weighing 10-30 kilograms. The former cast member claims that as a consequence, in January 2017, she “developed severe pain in her arm and was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome.”

However, unfortunately for the former cast member, presiding Judge Tadahiro Okayama of the Chiba District Court said that Oriental Land “could not have foreseen the plaintiff’s condition deteriorating to the extent that she needed to reduce her work duties.” As a consequence, the plaintiff, who was claiming that the firm had breached the duty of care, did not have a supported case.
