It appears that the British Royal family just cannot stop making Disney-related news. It started when the Walt Disney Company agreed with the Reedy Creek Improvement District just before the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District took over. Disney and the Reedy Creek Board stripped the new Board of most of its authority until the last living descendent of King Charles III died.
King Charles then decided to throw some shade at his coronation. It’s no secret that Charles, 74, waited a very long to be King. Anyone who’s seen The Crown knows that. So, he decided to have a little fun with it. He chose “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King” from The Lion King (1994) for his coronation music. Strangely enough, he also chose “Be Prepared,” sung in the movie by Scar and is about killing the Monarch, which led some people to believe that he had never actually seen the movie. Charles also invited Winnie the Pooh to attend his big event.
But outside of those rather coincidental moments, there are very few ties between the British Royal Family and the Walt Disney Company. But a new video that has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times and has more than 40,000 likes claims that Disney is exempt from American and Florida laws because the company is, in fact, owned by the British Royal Family.
The video posted on Instagram claims that since 1960, Disney has not paid any federal or state taxes, as being owned by the Royals makes it tax-exempt. The video also claims this is only coming to light now because of Disney’s lawsuit against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
Disney is only now revealing its actual ownership because Governor DeSantis has changed Florida law to strip Disney of its self-governing District and replace it with the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. The video claims that Disney only now reveals its true ownership in legal documents.
The Truth
There are a number of falsehoods in this video, and despite the exaggerated nature of the lies, there are still people who will believe them. First of all, Disney is not owned by the British Royal family. That claim should be obvious, but here we are. The British Royal Family mainly owns land and lots of it.
Disney did pay taxes. In Florida, Disney paid more than $1.1 billion in state and local taxes in 2022, making it one of the largest taxpayers in the state. Disney also paid state taxes in California and federal taxes.
The video also falsely claims that Florida Gov Ron DeSantis took away Disney’s special District because the company allegedly “groomed children.” DeSantis and the Florida Legislature removed the Disney World District after the company responded to the state’s Parental Rights in Education Law, known by its critics as the Don’t Say Gay” law. Both sides are currently in court fighting the removal of Disney World’s district.
Despite what the video says, Disney and its visitors are subject to all Florida and United States laws. The information in the video is entirely false, and lacks the authority to comment on this story. Disney’s only connection with the King is England in EPCOT, and some of its movies happen to be set there.
We will continue to update this news at Disney Fanatic.
