“No Ride is Worth Waiting Over 90 Mins For”: Is Disney Genie+ Necessary?

It’s fair to say that the Disney Genie suite is one of the most debated and contested services at the Disney Parks. The product which Disney has stood firm in its belief in, and support for, is one that has found many Guests constantly frustrated at its efficacy and, more importantly, its price. Fans have repeatedly expressed their disappointment that Disney Genie+, Lightning Lane, and Individual Lightning Lane are as expensive as they are, especially considering how pricey going to Walt Disney World and Disneyland can already be.

Having said this, recently, some Disney fans expressed sentiments that may well explain why so many are willing to pay for the service despite it being an additional price tag for the Disney experience.

Reddit user u/Just_Looking_Around8 took to the social media platform to inquire about fellow fans’ “unpopular Disney opinions,” and one fan’s response stood out. U/guy_incog_neato commented, “no ride is worth waiting over 90 mins for (and really the 90 mins only applies to brand new attractions. anything i’ve ever previously ridden is capped at 45-50 mins.)”

And fellow commenters agreed. One shared they wouldn’t do more than 30 minutes, while another gave the Disney rides a bit more time at 60 mins. However, the OP themselves shared some math that they did, recalling the overall price of a Disney vacation,

I’m constantly doing the math in my head about this. “Our family of 4 paid approximately $450 to be in this park today. It’s open 12 hours. That’s $37.50 per hour. This 2-hour line would cost us $75.00 for a 4-minute ride. No way.” Yes, I understand that Disney is expensive. But I can’t think of any 4-minute experience in life that I’d happily pay $75.00.

It certainly puts into perspective why Disney Genie+ has become such a necessity at either Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort. When Guests have a limited time to take in their experience at the Parks, it stands to reason they don’t want to spend the majority of that time waiting in a queue just to ride an attraction they enjoy.

It would certainly be nice for that necessity to be more affordable, though.

More on the Disney Genie suite

Disney’s Genie product is a three-part puzzle composed of Genie+, Lightning Lane, and Individual Lightning Lane. Available at both Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort, the service allows Guests to enjoy shorter waits during their trip to a Disney Resort. While not every Disney Park attraction is available on the Disney Genie Lightning Lane offerings, they are instead available as Individual Lightning Lane selections.

Attractions like Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Expedition Everest, Slinky Dog Dash, and Toy Story Mania! are available through Disney Genie+, whereas ones like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Avatar Flight of Passage are available as Individual Lightning Lane selections.
