The Great 18″ Doll Lines

On May 5, 1986, American Girl debuted with their original 18-inch dolls from the Pleasant Company. The original lineup included pioneer girl Kirsten Larson, Edwardian-era girl Samantha Parkington, and World War II-era daughter Molly McIntire.

Over the years, the premium doll line expanded to include more girls from different eras. Some particularly popular dolls were the “just like me” dolls that were made to order (to look exactly like their owners), with a wide catalog of outfits and accessories available to make the doll match a girl’s individual style and hobbies. And the success of the doll line led to imitators: specifically Our Generation Dolls from the Battat toy company.

Despite some small superficial differences, the dolls were fictionally identical, differing themselves mainly in their business model.  The doll line was made available at retailers like Walmart and Target rather than at flagship stores like the American Girl stores, making them more accessible along with a much lower price tag.

Disney recently entered the 18″ collectible doll arena with Disney ily 4EVER or “Disney I Love You Forever” from Jakks Pacific Toys Inc., exclusively available at Target retail stores.

Disney ily 4EVER is an 18-inch doll brand inspired by beloved Disney stories and characters. It includes a line of dolls, trendy fashions and aspirational accessories that celebrate everything kids love about Disney. Inspired by characters such as Ariel, Minnie Mouse, and Tinker Bell, and themes such as outdoor activities and culinary arts, this line combines the best of Disney with the latest fashions and must-have accessories!

Like American Girls and Our Generation Dolls before them, these dollies are 18″ tall and have a soft body, with five points of articulation. Though their clothing and accessories are inspired by Disney, the dolls themselves are not inspired by any particular Disney Princess or heroine. They are made to look like any girl, with a dreamy Disney-style wardrobe that would be the envy of any Disney fashionista.
