Rachel Zegler Defends Her ‘PC’ Version of ‘Snow White’

The Walt Disney Company has recently faced a lot of criticism for its “woke” policies and its focus on politically correct content (not to mention other issues like increasing prices and Disney Park Guests’ increasingly inappropriate behavior). The upcoming live-action adaptation of Snow White is apparently sticking with that approach, and its star Rachel Zegler has just spoken up in defense of the “PC Snow White.”

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Rachel Zegler recently commented on the controversy and negative reactions that have surrounded the upcoming Snow White film (which also stars Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen). The movie initially faced a lot of backlash after Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage criticized its portrayal of the dwarves from the original 1937 film.

“People are making these jokes about ours being the PC Snow White, where it’s like, yeah, it is — because it needed that,” Zegler explained to Vanity Fair, making it clear that she has been following the controversy. “It’s an 85-year-old cartoon, and our version is a refreshing story about a young woman who has a function beyond ‘Someday My Prince Will Come.’”

Zegler also shared that she had found the questioning involving Disney’s choice to cast her as Snow White, the original Disney princess, to be a difficult experience. We heard the young actress defend her casting and explain the new version of the character many times during the West Side Story press tour and awards season, when the actress was answering challenging and potentially-explosive questions about two different projects constantly.

“I don’t think there could be a more stressful press tour than what I had to do for West Side Story,” she admitted. “Having to answer for a lot of cultural questions and at the same time answer for why I got cast as a Disney princess that isn’t associated with my skin color — it was bizarre.”

Rachel Zegler is also starring in the Hunger Games prequel called The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, as well as the superhero sequel called Shazam! Fury of the Gods. She rose to fame quickly in 2021 after starring in the new version of West Side Story, which received critical acclaim.

Zegler made it clear in the recent interview that she thinks the new Snow White’s politically correct style is a positive quality, and this is not the first time that Rachel Zegler has openly spoken out against naysayers or unkind social media users.

The actress and singer recently defended actress Halle Bailey, who received an onslaught of online hate from people who disapproved of her casting as the little mermaid Ariel in the new Little Mermaid movie.

Are you excited about the new Snow White film? Do you like the idea of a more progressive version of the 1937 movie?
