In 1995, Pixar Animation Studios completely changed the film industry with the release of Toy Story, the first feature-length film to be completely computer-animated. The film starred Tom Hanks as the voice of Woody, a cowboy toy who is the favorite toy of his owner, Andy. But Woody’s world is turned upside down when Andy is gifted a new toy that quickly becomes his favorite — Buzz Lightyear, voiced by Tim Allen.

Toy Story was a massive hit, making more than $365 million at the worldwide box office. Four years later, Toy Story 2 was released, and it was more successful than the original film! Toy Story 2 made more than $500 million at the box office. If that’s not crazy enough, the third and fourth Toy Story made even more than their predecessors. Toy Story 3 (2010) made more than $1 billion at the box office, and Toy Story 4 also made over $1 billion, just slightly more than Toy Story 3.

Back in February, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that Disney was going to be making a fifth film in the Toy Story franchise. Disney purchased Pixar back in 2006.

Just before Thanksgiving, Tim Allen sat down for an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. During the interview, Toy Story 5 was brought up and Allen admitted that he had been contacted by Disney. He said that both he and Tom Hanks had been contacted about reprising their roles as Sheriff Woody and Buzz Lightyear.

“Bob Iger, head of Disney, said it was on and actually said it was going to happe. They have reached out to Tom and I to reprise the roles. They’re not saying anything about it…You wonder if four was too many. Is five going to be too much?”

Right now, we have almost no details on the new movie. But Allen also shared that Disney had hired one of the writers of  “the original series” to write the new film.

“According to the scuttlebutt, the writer that’s doing it wrote one of the better ones and said, ‘If I didn’t get this right, I wouldn’t do it.’ It could be a very, very interesting way to reunite it.”

In addition to starring in all four Toy Story films, Allen has been a huge part of the Disney family. In 1994, he starred in The Santa Clause as Scott Calvin — a selfish toy company executive who becomes Santa after accidentally scaring the prior Santa off of the roof. The Santa Clause made more than $190 million and, in 2002, The Santa Clause 2 was released. Four years later, in 2006, the final film in the trilogy — The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause — came out.
