Ride shutdowns are not uncommon at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. Certain attractions will close for many reasons, mostly for guest safety. However, a recent and somewhat unusual occurrence has reportedly been the source of multiple shutdowns at a Magic Kingdom attraction lately. The incredibly popular and beloved Pirates of the Caribbean ride has been forced to close several times due to a rather unexpected reason: the presence of unwelcome guests.
Why Is the Rum Gone?
The Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at Disney’s Magic Kingdom in Florida, inspired by the original Disneyland version, has a rich history dating back to its opening on December 15, 1973. This immersive boat ride takes visitors through captivating scenes of pirate life, featuring meticulously crafted animatronic pirates, hidden treasures, and even epic battles. Over time, the attraction has evolved, incorporating elements from the popular Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise. Captain Jack Sparrow even features near the end of the ride.
However, reports have circulated that the attraction houses more than just pirates. Despite its historical charm and enduring appeal, the dark and damp conditions within the ride serve as a perfect habitat for pests.
Bats in Pirates of the Caribbean
InsidetheMagic has detailed multiple reports about a bat infestation taking over Pirates of the Caribbean at Disney World. An anonymous tip claimed that more than 500 bats live inside the dark walls of the ride. The animals have also reportedly caused mayhem for multiple Disney cast members and guests.
Since the initial report, several guests across various mediums have more detailed their experience with Pirates of the Caribbean closing down more than usual. One response on the InsidetheMagic article responded, “We were there on 7/31/23 and witnessed bats flying out of the entrance of pirates of the Caribbean. Cast members also witnessed it at the same time we did.”
Guests have speculated that the bats might be causing the ride to shut down periodically. A Reddit thread popped up detailing the issue, with some people claiming the bats have something to do with it.
We rode it for the haloween party on Friday but after that it was closed all day Saturday, I read an article stating bats are in there?

The bats rumor must be true. It’s going down a lot more than normal.

It is important to stress that this is all speculative based on the original article. Disney has not confirmed nor denied the presence of bats in the attraction. However, it wouldn’t be a stretch to think the flying mammals would find the dark ride a perfect place to call home.
Disney Fanatic will continue to update this story with more information when it presents itself. While bats at Pirates of the Caribbean may seem unsanitary, don’t let it ruin your experience at Magic Kingdom! The ride is often still running, and Disney hasn’t said it’s unsafe to go on it.
