Lin-Manuel Miranda Fails an ‘Encanto’ Song Challenge

It’s clear from the Golden Globe Award, the chart-topping soundtrack, the popular merchandise, the fan-made online mashups, and the positive reviews that Encanto has made an enormous impression on Disney fans ever since it was released in theaters last November and premiered on Disney+ on Christmas Eve.

Although the movie has been praised for everything from its vibrant animation to its diverse characters, the main talking point has been the Disney movie’s notoriously addicting music written by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Recently, the actor, songwriter, and playwright was on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon — and even though other celebrities like Hilary Duff have admitted to having the movie’s biggest song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” on replay, Lin-Manuel struggled to identify the song in a humorous Disney song contest during the show!

Jimmy Fallon and Lin-Manuel Miranda were playing “One Second Songs”, in which only one second of a Disney song was played and they each took turns guessing the song. Lin-Manuel Miranda got the first one right immediately, recognizing his own song “You’re Welcome” from Moana (2016), saying that “The Rock is the Rock is the Rock. I’m always gonna recognize the Rock.”

Later on in the game, a one-second clip was played from “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”, and Lin-Manuel was blanking on the song. “I’m stumped,” he said, even after hearing a replay. Jimmy Fallon also said “I have no clue” when he got a chance to guess the song.

When it was revealed that the song was “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”, Lin-Manuel was mortified while Jimmy Fallon burst into laughter. “That’s my own song”, Lin-Manuel said. “The call was coming from inside the house”!

While fans who have been obsessively listening to “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” on replay will be shocked that anyone could listen to a portion of the song without recognizing it, it seems understandable that Lin-Manuel Miranda might get confused. The celebrity has, after all, written dozens of songs!

Since “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” is so catchy, perhaps he even mentally compartmentalized it after writing it to avoid the same plight that Hilary Duff and many other Disney fans or celebrities have faced.

The other songs involved in the game were “Belle”,” “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”, “Part of Your World”, “A Spoonful of Sugar”, and “Let It Go” (a song whose record was actually just beaten by Encanto recently).

Three other songs from Encanto that were not in the Tonight Show contest but have also been fan favorites are “Surface Pressure”, “What Else Can I Do”, and “The Family Madrigal”!
