Disney theme parks often undergo periods of refurbishment in order to provide updates and maintenance to iconic attractions. With Splash Mountain currently closed at Disneyland in California, Guests are left without a beloved ride. Now, visitors to the Park this fall will not have the option to experience another iconic mountain attraction.
Space Mountain Refurbishment at Disneyland Resort in California
If you are planning a trip to Disneyland in California this fall, there’s a notable update regarding the beloved Space Mountain attraction. Starting on September 18, 2023, and running for a good portion of the season, Space Mountain will undergo a refurbishment period. Disney has announced that the ride will temporarily close its doors until the mid-fall of the same year.
Space Mountain is a classic favorite among Disneyland fans. It has undergone many changes since the Park opened but has never lost its charm. The indoor roller coaster experience is popular for its colorful and fast-paced space action. The ride, which has been in operation since its opening on May 27, 1977, offers a thrilling journey through simulated outer space. Visitors board spacecraft-like roller coaster vehicles and navigate a series of twists, turns, and drops in a dimly lit, starry setting.
The impending refurbishment aims to enhance the overall experience for Guests. While specific details about the changes and updates have not been disclosed, it’s common for Disney to use such refurbishment periods to improve ride mechanisms, update visual effects, and ensure a safe and smooth operation. Scott Gustin broke the news on Twitter/X and recently made the update for the intended reopening date.

What Else to Do at Disneyland This Fall
That isn’t to say that there aren’t many other things to do while visiting the California theme park this fall. Visitors to Disneyland have no shortage of rides, including the loveable yet bumpy Matterhorn roller coaster. Galaxy’s Edge is always a space-themed delight as well.
The new San Fransokyo Square area will open at California Adventure on August 31. This spot is themed after Disney’s Big Hero 6 film and features a special meet-and-greet with Hiro Haman and Baymax. In the movie, you can also explore many shops and restaurant options themed around the city. The Park is also decorated for Halloween, which is always a delight.
Don’t let the temporary closure of Space Mountain stop you from visiting Disneyland this fall. There is still plenty to do and see across the Resort. However, we wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to wait for the iconic ride to reopen before forking out those rising ticket prices!
